The Roots of the Reformation (9 Days / 8 Nights)

The story of Martin Luther’s life and the history of the Reformation in Germany are attracting growing interest around the world. Visit the historic cities of Germany, the epicenter of the 16th century Protestant Reformation. Follow Luther’s footsteps across this beautiful country and historic cities.

Day 1: Munich - Augsburg
Thursday, December 26, 2024 - Friday, December 27, 2024

In the morning we travel from Munich to Augsburg. In 1530 Protestant believers proclaimed their confession, one of the most important documents of the Reformation, containing the Lutheran articles of faith.

Day 2: Augsburg - Nuremberg
Friday, December 27, 2024 - Saturday, December 28, 2024

After breakfast you follow Luther’s footsteps to Nuremberg and visit the Lutheran Lorenz Church. During a city tour you view the Imperial Castle and the Justice Palace. Continue on foot through the medieval alleyways to the main market square where you will have free time to stroll around.

Day 3: Nuremberg - Rothenburg - Heidelberg
Saturday, December 28, 2024 - Sunday, December 29, 2024

One of the highlights is the visit to Rothenburg, the best preserved medieval town in Europe. During a walking tour you visit St. Jacob´s Church with the renowned Blood Altar. Then continue to Heidelberg - the very symbol of German Romanticism and home to Germany‘s oldest University, where Martin Luther held one of his earliest debates with church leaders.

Day 4: Heidelberg - Speyer - Worms - Wurzburg
Sunday, December 29, 2024 - Monday, December 30, 2024

We leave for Speyer, dominated by its Cathedral, several churches and the Old town gate. Continue to Worms where we’ll enjoy a brief walking tour to see the site of the Worms Debates, the Reformation Monument, St. Peters, and the Church of the Holy Trinity. Continue to the ancient town of Würzburg, known as “the jewel of the Main River“.

Day 5: Wurzburg - Coburg - Erfurt
Monday, December 30, 2024 - Tuesday, December 31, 2024

We continue to the medieval city of Coburg where we will visit the famous Veste Coburg, where Luther took refuge and lived during the Augsburg Confession. Enjoy a sightseeing tour of Erfurt, including St. Mary’s Cathedral where he was ordained as priest. Visit the Augustinian Monastery where Luther lived as a monk and admire the largest wooden bridge in Europe.

Day 6: Erfurt - Eisleben - Leipzig
Tuesday, December 31, 2024 - Wednesday, January 1, 2025

Upon arrival in Eisleben you enjoy a city tour that includes the houses where Luther was born in 1483. In the afternoon you will visit Leipzig, where Bach served as choirmaster for 25 years and was buried at Thomaskirche

Day 7: Leipzig - Torgau - Wittenberg
Wednesday, January 1, 2025 - Thursday, January 2, 2025

In Torgau we visit the sites associated with Katharina von Bora, including her grave in St. Mary’s Church. Then we proceed to Wittenberg, designated as “Luther Town”. It was here that Luther gained notoriety by posting his 95 theses to the door of the Castle Church.

Day 8: Wittenberg - Berlin - Spandau - Berlin
Thursday, January 2, 2025 - Friday, January 3, 2025

On the way to Berlin, we stop in Berlin Spandau where the prince-elector consummated his conversion to the protestant church. This tour ends with a city tour of Berlin.
